A gardener friend of mine once advised me that grass seed and bulbs both thrive best when springtime comes if they are properly planted in the fall. Tucking those seeds and bulbs into the soil becomes a test of both faith and patience, knowing it will be months before your preparation pays off, when spring arrives at last and the garden blooms. In the month of May, we can see our school blooms!
How our students have grown this year! Certainly, many of them are significantly taller (as attested to by the extra inch of ankle or knee visible below the hemlines of uniforms that fit perfectly just a few months ago).Â
At morning drop-off, it’s easy to see the confidence and independence that have gained ground in our kindergarteners as they cheerfully step to their classrooms, self-assured and ready for the day.
From the works of art that bedeck the walls to the melodious rhythm of a hymn in Greek echoing softly in the hall, from cursive letters that have acquired elegant regularity to polynomial factoring skills that have become second nature – all bear witness to a steady march (and occasional dance) toward proficiency.
If I let the timeline stretch further back, what a privilege I’ve had over the last four years to watch several shy elementary students grow into middle schoolers with the composure and skill to stand at the front of the cathedral to read the epistle during school liturgy.
At the end of the month of May, we will send five eighth-graders off to the next stage of their education. And whether that eighth-grade graduate has been a student of ours since PreK or merely for a brief two years, we have done our best to give them all they need to bloom: not only the tools to communicate effectively through both the written and spoken word, confidence and fluency in mathematics, and a treasure trove of wisdom and delight, but also the habits of patience, perseverance, and courage.
Our goal and our prayer have been achieved for each of these students when we can say:
A CSA graduate can recognize and appreciate beauty.
A CSA graduate knows to seek and value truth.
A CSA graduate apprehends and strives toward goodness.
I pray – for each student and teacher – peace and courage and patience and joy as we tackle the last weeks of school!
