Classical education is often perceived as having a weak emphasis on STEM-related subjects. However, we believe that classical education strengthens math skills, as well as those needed for a solid foundation in science, technology, and engineering. That is because the very tools that make us strong in the humanities actually foster a deep understanding of STEM subjects, too. Therefore, at Christ the Savior Academy (CSA), we strive to cultivate well-rounded individuals who are not only familiar with the great works of literature and history but also possess a strong foundation in science and math.
Why Classical Roots Make Math Blossom
The entirety of our classical curriculum naturally emphasizes critical thinking, problem-solving, and a deep understanding of logic – all essential building blocks for math proficiency. By cultivating mathematical maturity within the precise world of numbers and shapes, we equip students with the clarity of thought essential for engaging great minds and enduring ideas throughout their classical education.

For this reason, we teach math using the highly successful Singapore Math framework. Recognized globally for its emphasis on conceptual understanding and problem-solving, Singapore Math develops clear and logical thinking in our students from Kindergarten through 8th grade.
Where Singapore Math & Classical Education Meet
Concrete to Abstract Learning
A curriculum that focuses on the abstract first, doesn’t teach thinking. If you look at other parts of our curriculum, you’ll know we value memorization very highly, and memorization has an important role in elementary school mathematics. However, a curriculum that focuses heavily on drills and algorithms alone puts the abstract first rather than the concrete. It doesn’t utilize mathematics’ full potential to teach students how to think!
So common, it’s almost cliche is the example of students who are very fast on the draw with multiplication tables but crumple before their first story problem. This happens because they don’t have any idea what to do with the multiplication facts they are so proud to know.
Singapore Math utilizes a Concrete-Pictorial-Abstract (CPA) approach. Lessons begin with the manipulation of physical objects (concrete) to explore mathematical concepts. Then, just as maps and timelines enhance learning in other subject areas, we progress to visual aids (pictorial) like bar models and number lines to help students visualize the mathematical relationships at hand. Finally, students learn to express the entire process using the language of mathematical symbols (abstract).
Mastery of Fundamentals
As a classical school, Christ the Savior Academy focuses on mastering the building blocks of knowledge before progressing to more complex ideas. And math is no exception. Students aren’t just rushed through rote procedures to pack thirty concepts into a school year, as with other math curricula. Instead, they cover ten to fourteen concepts that logically build on each other. Our teachers ensure each student has a solid grasp of foundational concepts before moving on to more complex topics.

As a result, they develop a deeper understanding of the relationships between numbers and their operations as well as the ability to model and discuss those relationships. Becoming proficient at modeling and communicating mathematical relationships is then what allows them to tackle increasingly complex problems with a confidence that doesn’t come from speed or from memorization alone.
Problem-Solving at the Heart
The Singapore Math approach is a story-problem-forward curriculum. Rather than memorizing abstract facts, students become adept users of mathematics. A situation requiring math will also exercise the student’s ability to understand, model, communicate, test, and reflect. All the steps of problem-solving are there. True problem-solving and logical thinking skills don’t come from doing sheets and sheets of drills, they are earned through solving lots of problems!
Applied mathematicians, engineers, scientists, and financial analysts all live in the world of story problems. Through Singapore Math, we equip our students with a problem-solving toolbox. They learn to break down problems, analyze information, and develop multiple solution strategies. We continue emphasizing critical thinking and logic inherent in a classical education. Through grappling with challenging problems, students not only learn math, they also develop the ability to communicate their thoughts clearly – a valuable lifelong skill applicable to all disciplines.
Building Mathematical Maturity
By focusing on conceptual understanding and a mastery approach, our Singapore Math program fosters a love of learning math in our students. Our goal is for them to see themselves as capable mathematicians, not just memorizers of formulas. This increasing mathematical maturity empowers them to approach new mathematical challenges with a positive and growth-oriented mindset.

Unleashing Mathematical Potential Through Classical Education
Classical education might not always be the first thing that comes to mind when you think of strong math programs. Yet, our unique approach – which combines the rich traditions of classical education with the best practices of the Singapore Math curriculum – provides our students with the tools they need to excel in mathematics and beyond.
We aim to cultivate a love for learning and a fascination with the beauty and logic inherent in math. By fostering a deep understanding of mathematical concepts, we empower students to become lifelong learners who can approach any problem with confidence and critical thinking. This prepares them not only for standardized tests but also for the analytical thinking required for higher-level math courses and future careers in any field they choose to pursue, perhaps especially the STEM fields.
By 8th grade, students have begun algebra and are prepared by both their math curriculum and their reading and writing skills to tackle Euclid and proof-writing if they have the opportunity. They are ready to step smoothly into any standard high school math curriculum as well.
If you’re searching for a school that fosters a love for learning, while ensuring academic excellence in math and other subjects, we invite you to explore our classical curriculum. Contact us today to learn more about how we can unlock your child’s potential in math and beyond.
